Abstract Studies have provided evidence that morphological awareness contributes to word reading in opaque languages such as English. However, this relationship is not yet established for Brazilian Portuguese, a much less opaque language. The present study performed a longitudinal investigation of the relationship between morphological awareness and word reading in 162 children from 2nd to 5th grades of elementary school. The children were evaluated in the final quarter of the respective school year (time 1) and 1 year later (time 2). Hierarchical regression analyses controlling for intelligence, phonological awareness, and phonological working memory were conducted. The hierarchical regression analyses were followed up by cross-lagged panel correlations, and both results converged to word reading measured in the 2nd and 3rd grades contributing to morphological awareness 1 year later. In addition, morphological awareness measured in the 4th grade contributed to word reading 1 year later. The greater transparency of Brazilian Portuguese may make morphological awareness less important for word reading in the early grades; however, in older children, morphological awareness is important for word reading performance.

Abstract Evaluating school engagement is crucial to identifying students at risk of dropping out and monitoring academic progress. The aim of this study was to develop and obtain evidence of validity for a Student School Engagement Scale Inferred by Teachers (EEAE-IP). The study included 488 students from the 2nd to the 5th year of elementary school in Minas Gerais. The EEAE-IP presents good psychometric properties, with Confirmatory Factor Analysis attesting to the four-factor model (behavioral, cognitive, affective and agent). Evidence of the scale’s internal consistency was good with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.92 and the inter-rater reliability suggests that the construct is assessed in the same way by different observers. The EEAE-IP is quick to apply and uses the teacher as an informant. Further studies that provide data for validity in other populations were suggested. This study reinforces the role of the EEAE-IP in future psychoeducational research.

Resumen Evaluar la participación escolar es crucial para identificar a los estudiantes en riesgo de abandonar la escuela y monitorear el progreso académico. El objetivo de este estudio fue construir y obtener evidencias de validez para una Escala de Compromiso Estudiantil Inferida por los Profesores (EEAE-IP). El estudio incluyó a 488 alumnos del 2º al 5º año de la enseñanza fundamental de Minas Gerais. La EEAE-IP presenta buenas propiedades psicométricas, con el Análisis Factorial Confirmatorio dando fe del modelo de cuatro factores (conductual, cognitivo, afectivo y agente). La evidencia de la consistencia interna de la escala fue buena con un Alfa de Cronbach de 0,92 y la confiabilidad entre evaluadores sugiere que el constructo es evaluado de la misma manera por diferentes observadores. La EEAE-IP es rápida de aplicar y utiliza al profesor como informante. Sugerimos más estudios que proporcionen datos para la validez en otras poblaciones. Este estudio refuerza el papel de la EEAE-IP en futuras investigaciones psicoeducativas.

Resumo Avaliar o engajamento escolar é crucial para identificar alunos em risco de evasão e monitorar o progresso acadêmico. O objetivo deste estudo foi construir e obter evidências de validade para uma Escala de Engajamento dos Alunos na Escola Inferido por Professores (EEAE-IP). Participaram do estudo 488 alunos do 2ª ao 5ª ano do Ensino Fundamental de escolas de Minas Gerais. A EEAE-IP apresenta boas propriedades psicométricas, com Análise Fatorial Confirmatória atestando o modelo de quatro fatores (comportamental, cognitivo, afetivo e agente). A evidência da consistência interna da escala foi boa com um Alfa de Crombach de 0,92 e a fidedignidade interobservador sugere que o construto é avaliado da mesma forma por diferentes observadores. A EEAE-IP é de rápida aplicação e utiliza o professor como informante. Sugerimos novos estudos que forneçam dados para a validade em outras populações. Este estudo reforça o papel da EEAE-IP em futuras pesquisas psicoeducacionais.

Resumo O estudo investigou a influência de variáveis cognitivas na leitura de crianças com desenvolvimento típico e em crianças com Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade (TDAH). Participaram 70 crianças do 2° ao 7° anos do Ensino Fundamental, divididas nos grupos: TDAH e controle. Foram aplicadas tarefas de consciência fonológica, memória de trabalho fonológica, nomeação seriada rápida, vocabulário, quociente de inteligência (QI), atenção, flexibilidade cognitiva e leitura (precisão, fluência e compreensão). Análises de regressão linear múltipla indicaram que a nomeação seriada rápida e a consciência fonológica contribuíram fortemente para a precisão, a fluência e a compreensão de leitura. O TDAH influenciou somente na compreensão. Argumentou-se que provavelmente os componentes da função executiva são os responsáveis pela relação entre TDAH e compreensão de leitura.

Abstract This study investigated the influence of cognitive variables on reading in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children with typical development. Seventy children from 2th to 7th grade took part in this study and were divided into two groups: ADHD and control. Tasks of phonological awareness, phonological work memory, rapid automatized naming, vocabulary, intelligence quotient (IQ), attention, cognitive flexibility and reading (accuracy, fluency, and comprehension) were applied. Multiple linear regression analyses indicated that rapid serial naming and phonological awareness strongly contributed to reading accuracy, reading fluency, and comprehension. ADHD only influenced comprehension, probably because of its relation to executive function.

Abstract Phonological awareness is one of the most important predictors of reading. However, there is still controversy concerning its dimensionality. This study evaluated the dimensionality of phonological awareness among Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children. A total of 212 children performed six phonological awareness tasks in the last year of kindergarten. Of those children, 177 performed the same tasks when they were in the first grade. The phonological awareness measures differed in both their cognitive demand (detection, blending, segmentation, and elision) and the phonological unit involved (rhyme, syllable, and phoneme). Confirmatory factor analyzes were employed to test several models of phonological awareness dimensionality. The results indicated that the best model was an oblique model of phonological units with two correlated latent factors: phonemic awareness and supraphonemic awareness. This model presented the best fit to the data both in kindergarten and in the first grade. In addition, supraphonemic awareness in the kindergarten predicted phoneme awareness in the first grade; however, phonemic awareness in the kindergarten did not predict supraphonemic awareness in the first grade. These results are compatible with phonological awareness developing from larger phonological units (e.g., syllables) to small phonological units (e.g., phonemes) and the reciprocal relationship between phonological awareness and reading. From a theoretical point of view, these results also suggest that phonological awareness is a one-dimensional construct that can be evaluated by tests employing different phonological units (e.g., syllables, rhymes, phonemes).

O objetivo desse estudo foi revisar sistematicamente as publicações sobre engajamento escolar nas bases SciELO, PsycINFO e ERIC com os seguintes descritores: school engagement , engajamento escolar e envolvimento escolar . Foram selecionados os estudos que atendiam aos critérios de inclusão: (a) artigos cujos descritores supracitados constavam no título, resumo ou palavras-chave; (b) estudos publicados na modalidade artigo científico e (c) no período de 2014 a 2018. Como critérios de exclusão: (a) artigos com foco em outros temas, (b) não disponíveis na íntegra e (c) duplicados. Foram encontrados 410 estudos e 203 selecionados. A maioria dos estudos é correlacional e a produção sobre engajamento se concentra no eixo América do Norte/Europa. O engajamento foi tratado na maioria dos estudos como um constructo tridimensional e foram encontradas 35 escalas que avaliam o engajamento. Faz-se necessário mais estudos experimentais e quasi-experimentais devido à importância destes para a avaliação e desenvolvimento de intervenções que visem melhorar o engajamento escolar e também estudos que avaliem a relação entre o engajamento escolar e outras variáveis pertinentes ao contexto escolar.

L'objectif de cette étude était de faire une révision systématique des publications sur l'engagement scolaire, dans les bases de données SciELO, PsycINFO et ERIC, à partir des descripteurs suivants: school engagement , engajamento escolar et envolvimento escolar . Ainsi, les études ont été sélectionnées selon les critères d inclusion: (a) articles dont les descripteurs sont mentionnés dans le titre, dans le résumé ou dans les mots-clés; (b) études publiées sous la modalité d'article scientifique et (c) avec parution entre 2014 et 2018. Et selon les critères d'exclusion: (a) articles traitant d'autres thèmes, (b) juste partiellement disponibles et (c) en double. À partir de ces critères, 203 études ont été sélectionnées entre les 410 études trouvées. Entre les sélectionnées, la plupart des études sont corrélationnelles et la production sur le thème de l'engagement est concentrée sur l'axe Amérique du Nord/Europe. L'engagement a été traité dans la plupart de ces études comme une construction tridimensionnelle et 35 échelles évaluant l'engagement ont été trouvées. D'autres études expérimentales et quasi expérimentales sont nécessaires, en raison de leur importance pour l'évaluation et le développement d'interventions visant à améliorer l'engagement scolaire, ainsi que des études qui évaluent la relation entre l'engagement scolaire et d'autres variables pertinentes au contexte scolaire.

The purpose of this study was to systematically review the publications on school engagement in the SciELO, PsycINFO and ERIC databases with the following descriptors: school engagement , engajamento escolar and envolvimento escolar . The studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected: (a) articles with the abovementioned descriptors in the title, abstract or keywords; (b) studies published in the scientific article modality and (c) in the period from 2014 to 2018. As exclusion criteria: (a) articles focusing on other topics, (b) not fully available and (c) duplicates. There were 410 studies and 203 selected. Most of the studies are correlational and the production on engagement is concentrated on the North America/Europe axis. The engagement was treated in most of the studies as a three-dimensional construct and 35 scales were found to assess engagement. Further experimental and quasi-experimental studies are necessary due to their importance for the evaluation and development of interventions aimed at improving school engagement, and also studies that evaluate the relationship between school engagement and other relevant variables to the school context.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou a precisão de classificação do risco de dificuldade de leitura e escrita, a partir do conhecimento do nome das letras. Foram aplicadas duas versões da tarefa de reconhecimento das letras, a primeira com todas as 26 letras do alfabeto, e a outra com apenas 15. A tarefa foi aplicada a 213 crianças brasileiras, matriculadas no último ano da Educação Infantil, sendo que, no primeiro ano do Ensino Fundamental, 176 delas realizaram a tarefa de escrita, e 174 a de leitura. Utilizaram-se a Teoria da Resposta ao Item e a simulação de rede neural para a escolha das 15 letras da versão reduzida da tarefa, e a análise da curva de Características Operacionais do Recebedor para avaliar a precisão de classificação das duas versões da tarefa. Os resultados indicaram que ambas as versões podem ser utilizadas para rastrear crianças com dificuldades de leitura e de escrita, áreas sob curvas de 0,83 e 0,80.

Abstract This study evaluated the precision of a Letter-Name Knowledge task in predicting children at risk/non-risk of reading and writing difficulties in Brazil. A second goal was to compare the precision of classification of two versions of this task: a 26 letter-task and a 15 letter-task. A total of 213 Brazilian children performed the 26 letter-task when they were in kindergarten. Of those children, 176 performed a writing task and 174 performed a reading task in 1st grade Elementary School. The choice of letters for the 15 letter-task was based on the Item Response Theory and on neural network simulation. The results based on the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analysis, showed that both tasks could be used for screening children with reading and writing difficulties (areas under the curve of 0.83 and 0.80).

RESUMO O tratamento com música vem demonstrando eficácia no tratamento de sintomas comportamentais e cognitivos gerais de pacientes com vários tipos de demência. Objetivo: Avaliar a eficácia do tratamento com música para a memória de pacientes com doença de Alzheimer (DA). Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática nos bancos de dados PubMed (Medline), Cochrane Library, PsycINFO e Lilacs até junho de 2017 que incluiu todos os ensaios clínicos randomizados controlados usando intervenções musicais em pacientes com DA e que avaliaram a memória. Resultados: Foram encontrados 42 estudos sendo selecionados 24 estudos completos. Após a aplicação dos critérios de exclusão, foram incluídos quatro estudos envolvendo 179 pacientes. Esses estudos mostraram os benefícios do uso da música para tratar o déficit de memória em pacientes com DA. Conclusão: Até o momento, este é o primeiro estudo de revisão sistemática que utilizou ensaios clínicos randomizados da literatura que analisou o papel das intervenções musicais especificamente na memória de pacientes com DA. Apesar do resultado positivo desta revisão, a evidência disponível permanece frágil devido ao pequeno número de ensaios clínicos randomizados.

ABSTRACT Treatment with music has shown effectiveness in the treatment of general behavioural and cognitive symptoms of patients with various types of dementia. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of treatment with music on the memory of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods: A systematic search was performed on PubMed (Medline), Cochrane Library, PsycINFO and Lilacs databases up to June 2017 and included all randomized controlled trials that assessed memory using musical interventions in patients with AD. Results: Forty-two studies were identified, and 24 studies were selected. After applying the exclusion criteria, four studies involving 179 patients were included. These studies showed the benefits of using music to treat memory deficit in patients with AD. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review focusing on randomized trials found in the literature that analysed the role of musical interventions specifically in the memory of patients with AD. Despite the positive outcome of this review, the available evidence remains inconsistent due to the small number of randomized controlled trials.

Abstract Many studies have shown that, while reading, the brain works a sort of decomposing process of words, reducing them to its morphemes. Moreover, many studies have shown that morphological awareness, which is the ability to reflect upon the structure of words, may contribute to reading in Brazilian Portuguese. The present study investigated morphological priming in children and evaluated the correlation between morphological priming and morphological awareness scores. One hundred and forty-one children took part in this research: 35 second graders, 33 third graders, 33 fourth graders, and 40 fifth graders. They performed a lexical decision task (LDT) and morphological awareness task. Results indicate that as early as the second grade, children show some degree of morphological priming effects. In addition, children from the fifth grade presented morphological priming effects similar to those of a skilled reader. No correlations between morphological awareness scores and morphological priming effects were found.

O presente estudo investigou a natureza das tarefas de nomeação seriada rápida, considerando três hipóteses sobre o que elas representariam: (1) medidas da recuperação de códigos fonológicos da memória de longo prazo; (2) medidas da velocidade de processamento geral; e (3) medidas de processos relacionados ao reconhecimento de padrões visuais. Participaram da pesquisa 174 crianças brasileiras cursando o 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental em escolas particulares. Análises fatoriais confirmatórias indicaram que nenhuma das três hipóteses se mostrou consistente com os dados. Porém, em um modelo de regressão estrutural construído para avaliar a contribuição desses fatores para a nomeação seriada rápida, o único que contribuiu significativamente foi o fator 'velocidade de processamento geral'.

The present study aimed to investigate the nature of rapid automatized naming tasks, considering three hypotheses about what they represent: (1) measures of retrieval of phonological codes from a long-term store; (2) measures of general processing speed; and (3) measures of visual pattern recognition processes. The participants were 174 children from the 5th grade of Brazilian private schools. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that none of the hypotheses were consistent with the data. However, in a structural regression model the factor 'general processing speed' was the only one that contributed significantly to rapid automatized naming.

O presente estudo avaliou, por meio da modelagem de equação estrutural, a estrutura fatorial subjacente às medidas de consciência fonológica, memória de trabalho fonológica e nomeação seriada rápida, tendo em vista o conflito na literatura no que se refere à natureza das tarefas de nomeação seriada rápida. Foram comparados modelos compatíveis com a proposta de que as tarefas de consciência fonológica, memória fonológica e nomeação seriada rápida avaliam o processamento fonológico e modelos compatíveis com a proposta de que tarefas de nomeação seriada rápida não avaliam o processamento fonológico. Os resultados desse estudo oferecem suporte à hipótese de que a nomeação seriada rápida não é uma medida do processamento fonológico.

Considering a conflict in literature regarding the nature of rapid automatized naming tasks, this study evaluated the factor structure underlying the measures of phonological awareness, phonological working memory and rapid automatized naming tasks using the method of structural equation modeling (SEM). Models compatible with the proposal that the tasks of phonological awareness, phonological working memory and rapid automatized naming assess phonological processing, and models compatible with the proposal that rapid automatized naming tasks do not assess phonological processing were compared. The results of this study support the hypothesis that rapid automatized naming tasks are not measures of phonological processing.

Dois experimentos foram realizados visando investigar o efeito do número de vizinhos ortográficos (N) e do número de vizinhos ortográficos de maior frequência de ocorrência (NF) em tarefas de leitura em voz alta (TLVA). Os estímulos experimentais consistiram em 64 palavras correspondentes a uma manipulação fatorial 2 x 2 de N e NF. No primeiro experimento, uma TLVA do tipo Go/NoGo, observou-se um efeito inibidor de NF quando as palavras tinham muitos vizinhos ortográficos. No segundo experimento, uma TLVA na qual tanto as palavras quantos as pseudopalavras deviam ser pronunciadas em uma mesma sessão, observou-se um efeito facilitador de N. Os efeitos de N e NF foram atribuídos a diferenças de ênfase entre as tarefas no processo de acesso lexical.

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the orthographic neighborhood density (N) and neighborhood frequency effects (NF) in reading aloud tasks. The experimental stimuli consisted of 64 words corresponding to a 2x2 factorial manipulation of N and NF. In the first experiment, during a Go/NoGo reading aloud task, an inhibitory NF effect was observed when the words had a high number of neighbors. In the second experiment, a reading aloud task in which the subjects had to pronounce words and pseudowords mixed in the same session, a facilitative N effect was observed. N and NF effects were attributed to different task demands on the process of lexical access.

Esse estudo investigou os efeitos do número de vizinhos ortográficos (N) e do número de vizinhos ortográficos de maior frequência de ocorrência (NF) na tarefa de identificação perceptual. Trinta e dois estudantes de psicologia falantes do português brasileiro participaram do estudo. Os estímulos experimentais consistiram em 64 palavras que atenderam a uma manipulação fatorial 2 x 2 de N e NF. Os participantes apresentaram uma maior porcentagem de erros nas palavras com vizinhos ortográficos de maior frequência e uma menor porcentagem de erros nas palavras com muitos vizinhos ortográficos. Argumentou-se que esses resultados refletem o efeito dessas variáveis no processo de acesso lexical e que os modelos de Dupla Rota e PPD têm dificuldades em acomodá-los.

This study investigated the effects of Neighborhood Density (ND) and Neighborhood Frequency (NF) on visual word recognition in 32 Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Participants were given a standard perceptual identification task in which they had a 3-second time-limit for saying aloud what the target word was. Experimental stimuli consisted of 64 words according to an ND (2) x NF (2) factorial design. Higher percentages of errors were made for words with a higher frequency neighbor and lower percentages of errors were made for words with a high neighborhood density. It is argued that the results were due to ND and NF effects on lexical access and that they pose difficulties for Dual Route and PDP models of visual word recognition.

Os efeitos de lexicalidade, freqüência, regularidade e a interação entre esses últimos foram investigados por meio de uma tarefa de leitura administrada em crianças brasileiras que cursavam o correspondente a 3ª e 4ª séries do ensino fundamental. Computou-se o TR e a porcentagem de erros na leitura em voz alta de palavras e de pseudopalavras isoladas. Observou-se o efeito de freqüência e de lexicalidade, mas não o de regularidade e nem a interação entre freqüência e regularidade. Com base nesses resultados e nos resultados de outros estudos, hipotetizou-se que o efeito de regularidade, no português brasileiro, se restringe às séries iniciais. Além disso, questionou-se também a adequação de uma classificação categórica de regularidade em contraposição a uma classificação contínua.

This study investigated the effects of lexicality, frequency, regularity, and the interaction of the two latter ones on a reading aloud task conducted with Portuguese-speaking children from 3rd and 4th grades. The reaction time (RT) and error percentage scores on reading aloud isolated words and pseudowords were computed. The data analysis revealed the effects of frequency and lexicality on reading aloud, but not the effect of regularity nor the frequency vs. regularity interaction effect. Based on these results and on results of other studies, it was hypothesized that the regularity effect exists only at first grades for Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children. In addition, it was questioned the adequacy of a categorical classification of regularity in the light of a continuum classification.

Os cognitivistas têm assumido que as críticas de Chomsky ao Verbal Behavior refutaram definitivamente a proposta skinneriana. No entanto, mesmo com mais de dez anos de atraso, as réplicas behavioristas à resenha de Chomsky começaram a aparecer. O presente trabalho faz uma revisão desse debate tendo como foco o possível caráter definitivo das críticas de Chomsky. A partir deste ponto de vista, conclui-se que nenhuma das críticas de Chomsky ao tratamento skinneriano do comportamento verbal é definitiva. Porém, algumas observações de Chomsky ainda podem oferecer desafios, como a questão da tautologia na lei do condicionamento operante e a crítica ao abandono do conceito de referência.

Cognitive psychologists have taken for granted that Chomsky's review of Verbal Behavior presents a refutation of Skinner's theory. However, only ten years after the Chomsky's review, the behaviorists replies to Chomsky started to appear. This work presents a review of this issue focusing on the possible conclusive character of Chomsky's criticisms. On this point of view, none of Chomsky's arguments against Skinner's theory of verbal behavior are conclusive. However, some of Chomsky's criticisms would still posit challenges, as the problem of tautology in operant conditioning's law and the criticism of the dismissing of the reference concept.
